6-11 November 2023, Kasteliotissa Medieval Hall, Nicosia

The Centre of Cypriot Composers is organising the latest edition of the Cyprus New Music Festival, spotlighting the contemporary musical creation in Cyprus, in which Cypriot composers present their works performed by great artists. As in the previous yeras, the concert series, along with a other parallel events, will be hosted in Kasteliotissa Medieval Hall, with everyday performances from Monday 6 to Saturday 11 November.

This year, the festival hosts five concerts with a wide variety of proposals, such as the enlightening Zeitfluss (AT) and dissonArt (GR) ensembles, as well the on-the-edge improvisational forces of the Cypriot composers' own Electroacoustic Ensemble, joined by other local music forces.

Composers’ Electroacoustic Ensemble [CY]

The Composers’ Electroacoustic Ensemble, founded in 2014, is an ensemble based on improvisation with alternative instrumentation performed by composers, which includes Theremin, El. Guitar, Prepared Piano, Lute, Electronics and Handmade Percussion. The group’s aim is to create music free from the boundaries of any pre-existing concept or style, and to directly react to the erroneous “harmony” promoted by the status quo; thus, giving space and priority to the element of instant communication and action.

dissonArt Ensemble [GR]

One of the top new music ensembles in Greece the ensemble dissonArt was founded in 2005 around a core of eight soloists and associated partners, with a flexible internal structure. The ensemble’s programs aim to promote works of recognized as well as emerging composers that deserve to be heard. Music-theatre works and collaborations with groups of other artistic disciplines, that result in the creation of original works, are among the main objectives of dissonArt, and to that end the ensemble has closely collaborated with many composers of international prestige.

Zeitfluss Ensemble (AT)

Music in the past and the present century is an exciting and fascinating chapter of the history of music. Regrettably it remains largely unknown to a greater audience. The works of notable composers of that time are very rarely found on the playing schedules of musicians in the city of Graz. With the Ensemble Zeitfluss, which was founded in October 2003, conductor Edo Micic, composer Kiawasch Saheb Nassagh and saxophonist Clemens Frühstück want to work against this cultural deficit.

It is the ambition of the Ensemble Zeitfluss to confront the works of great international composers with the works of native composers. A great concern of the Ensemble Zeitfluss is to present the exciting development of present-day music and its very often hidden beauty to the public.
